After finishing up two Indiana projects in October, DTD was called back by the same client to install three SVE wells under an active gas station facility. In 2012 the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) received a report of a release from an underground storage tank at the gas station. A site investigation followed which included vapor intrusion (VI) testing within the station building. Air sample results showed benzene levels above the commercial indoor air screening level.
To mitigate the vapor intrusion into the station building DTD utilized a Vermeer 24×40 drill rig to drill and install three blind SVE wells under the building. The wells were each drilled within the vadose zone at 5’ bgs and spanned the length of the station building (80’ long). Several unground utilities in the drilling area required carful bore planning and exposing of lines along the bore path to make certain the drill bit would pass safely by each line.
The drilling operation took place behind the gas station in a vacant lot, and because each well was installed blind (no exit) there was absolutely no interruption to the business. The project took a total of 3 days to complete and was finished as designed and on budget.
